NRC Meeting on San Onofre Nuclear Plant Safety

The crippled San Onofre nuclear power plant has posed an unnecessary risk to our environment and our communities. It has also left Southern California Edison ratepayers footing a 670.8 million dollar bill for critically-flawed steam generator equipment. Lax oversight on the part of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) allowed this to happen. On June 18th, we have our first opportunity to hold the NRC accountable. Your voice is needed! Please attend this meeting.

On January 31st, a steam generator tube ruptured in San Onofre reactor Unit 3, releasing radioactive steam into the environment. Further inspection revealed unprecedented, accelerated wear in the recently replaced steam generators of both reactor Units 2 and 3. According to reports by nuclear expert, Arnie Gundersen, these replacement steam generators contain significant design changes. These changes should have required a full license amendment process, with a public hearing. Instead, NRC Region IV accepted Southern California Edison’s word and allowed these replacement steam generators to be licensed under a perfunctory, rubberstamp process.

The NRC responded to these significant steam generator problems by deploying an Augmented Inspection Team (AIT). However, this team is under the oversight of Region IV, the same NRC office that rubberstamped the critically-flawed replacement steam generators initially.

On Monday, June 18th, the NRC will hold a preliminary public hearing on the AIT findings. However, the NRC has released no prior documentation to enable the public to make fully-informed inquiries into this process. This meeting is a gesture in the direction of transparency. However, there has been no real commitment to public engagement and the dissemination of information.

We must hold them accountable. Please come to the hearing, bring friends, and make your voices heard! Our communities deserve safety and transparency!

The Trans Pacific Trade Agreement is a massive trade agreement that will offshore American jobs, attack environmental protections and consumer safety policies, and deregulate Wall Street banks, hedge funds, and insurance companies. Representatives from corporations and other countries will be negotiating the TPP in San Diego.

In the last decade, more than 50,000 manufacturing facilities have closed, 6 million manufacturing jobs have been lost and the U.S. trade deficit has grown. And we've seen outsourcing spread to other sectors, like call centers and financial services.

Rally Against Federal Attacks on the Medical Cannabis Community

Why this rally is happening:

After closing down over 200 dispensaries throughout San Diego County, U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy has set her sights on Mother Earth's Alternative Healing Cooperative the only Sheriff Permitted medical marijuana dispensary in the 4 most southern county's in California. The Coop received an eviction notion to cease operation on Wed, July 25 due to the pressure from U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy’s office on there landlord.

Recently Attorney General Eric Holder and his U.S. Attorneys have indicated they are not targeting medical marijuana establishments in compliance with state law. However, this and other federal actions indicate otherwise.

Just weeks after Attorney General Holder testified before Congress in June that his Justice Department would only undertake enforcement action against medical marijuana organizations operating "out of conformity with state law," US Attorney Laura Duffy is trying to shut down Mother Earth's Coop, the only fully permitted medical cannabis dispensary in San Diego County.

Although the coop intends to serve patients and seek an emergency stay thru legal means, on Wednesday July, 25th at the Federal Courthouse in San Diego, the community will be rallying against these attacks and demanding that the Obama Administration uphold their promises to respect state law.

CAPB Justice for Victor Ortega Rally & March

On June 4, 2012 , 31 year old, Victor Ortega was wrongfully killed by a San Diego police officer. Victor was unarmed and according to witnesses in compliance with the officers demands. Stated by the Lieutenant the officer already had Victor down on the ground on his stomach and had cuffed one hand prior to him being shot and killed, Victor Ortega was a loving father, husband, son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend to many people.

We Demand Justice for Victor Ortega!

The San Diego Committee Against Police Brutality does not tolerate the murder of unarmed citizens by police. We all on all to come out and support the Family and let the Police know that we hold them accountable for their deadly actions against members of the community.

We will Rally at Mira Mesa Police Department then light candles and March to the Murder Scene where we will have a Candlelight Vigil.

“Knocking on the Devil’s Door: Our Deadly Nuclear Legacy”

The nuclear reactor catastrophes at Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and now at Fukushima, Japan, remind us that a heinous specter continues to hover over the health and security of millions of people around the world... This film, by award-winning director Gary Null, deconstructs the corporate and political rhetoric feeding the media misinformation campaigns to seduce us into believing that low level radiation emitted from nuclear plants is perfectly safe and that our future depends on nuclear energy. The film makes the connections between nuclear weapons and nuclear power, issues that concern us all.

"The Risks of Restarting the Damaged San Onofre Nuclear Plant"

This is a presentation by Daniel Hirsch, a Lecturer on Nuclear Policy and former Director of the Stevenson Program on Nuclear Police at UC Santa Cruz and President of the Committee to Bridge the Gap, a 42-year-old organization concerned about nuclear safety, proliferation, and waste.

The Yes Men:

The Yes Men are the duo of Mike Bonanno and Andy Bichlbaum have been creating interventions in the media and our daily lives for over a decade. Some of their most memorable works include the printing of 80,000 fake copies of the New York Times in 2008 that declared the end of the Iraq War, and the impersonation of a Dow Chemical Company spokesman on the BBC in 2004. Their activities have been chronicled in two films: The Yes Men (2003) and The Yes Men Fix the World (2009). During the first part of this week, The Yes Men have been in residence at Agitprop in North Park, conducting a workshop for local activist organizations on how to brainstorm creative, media-getting actions that broadcast their message.
